What is Typhoid?
Typhoid fever is a bacterial infection that can damage multiple organs and spread throughout the body. Without timely treatment, it can have serious health implications and even death.
It is a serious infection that is primarily transmitted by consuming food or water contaminated with the faeces or urine of an infected person.
High risk areas for Typhoid
Typhoid can be found throughout the world, but it is more prevalent in nations with poor access to clean water and sanitation facilities.
India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh are at highest risk, but you may also be at risk if you go to other countries in Asia, Africa, the Pacific, and South and Central America.
Main symptoms of Typhoid Fever
After becoming infected, it can take between one and three weeks to feel ill, so you may not have symptoms until you return home.
The basic symptoms of typhoid are similar to those of an upset stomach in general and may include:
a high temperature (fever)
cough
tiredness
General aches and pains
headaches
As the illness spreads, you may have nausea, a loss of appetite, constipation in older children and adults, diarrhoea in small children, and a rash in certain individuals.
If typhoid fever is not treated, symptoms may worsen and life-threatening complications may arise.
Ways to minimise the risk of typhoid fever during travel
The best approach to reducing your risk of typhoid infection while travelling is as follows:
Follow strict food and water safety procedures, including safe drinking water.
Observe hand hygiene and personal hygiene measures.
Some individuals may be advised to receive a typhoid vaccination, especially if they are travelling to a place where typhoid fever is prevalent or if they are unable to take enough precautions with hygiene, food, or water.
